Timetable & Map for Irish Aid's Africa Day Limerick Event

The timetable and map for Irish Aid's Africa Day Limerick event is now available to view and download. Local Afro / house DJ, Afrish Arts, will kick off proceedings on the Music Stage at the Limerick event this Sunday, while Limerick's amazing Lady Sheila Musical Band will close the event with their unique and fun blend of Eastern, Central and Southern African music. Highlights on the Music Stage over the course of the day will include:
- Koko Tanjah, one of the best new talents to have emerged on the African reggae scene in recent times, who will take to the stage at 2.45pm.
- The "wizards of feel-good frenzy, dancing, delirium and general mayhem" that are The Amazing Few, performing at 4.20pm.
- A ceremonial dance performance by the Edo United Association (Cork) at 3.45pm.
- Appearances by stand-up comedian, dancer, singer and all-round entertainer, Fabu-D, at various intervals over the course of the day.
In addition to the outdoor Music Stage, visitors to Irish Aid's Africa Day Limerick can enjoy
indoor music performances from UCH's African Power drumming project, Limerick Jazz Workshop and the SOFAD Ireland Choir. In the
Speakers' Corner, visitors can take part in a range of fun and interactive workshops over the course of the day, including:
- A 'Dance African Childhood' workshop, featuring dress-up, dance and African instruments for children, taking place in the Istabraq Hall at 12.30pm.
- A drumming workshop, also in the Istabraq Hall, at 2.30pm.
- A discussion on 'Building Ireland's Engagement with Africa', chaired by RTÉ's Cathy Halloran and featuring Minister of State for Overseas Development, Peter Power TD; broadcaster Rodney Rice; Eric Yao of the Africa Centre; Karen McHugh of Doras LuimnÃ, and other special guests. Taking place in the Council Chamber at 2.30pm.
- The Africa Day Book Club discussion, chaired by Geraldine McNulty and featuring Ieteke Oggel, Senator Fiona O'Malley, Bright Udemezue and other guests. Taking place in Istabraq Hall at 4pm.
Other highlights of the event will include the
African Embassies section and the
African Bazaar - featuring cultural displays and activities from over 20 different countries; the
Education Zone, with fun, family-focused activities from development education organisations and NGOs, and the
Sports and Play Area, with inputs fr
om the FAI, GAA and Munster Rugby.
As hosts of the event, Irish Aid will have a strong presence: in their Welcome Tent close to the venue entrance, families can register to take part in the Africa Day Treasure Hunt - all families that participate get a special prize! Beside John's Castle, visitors can visit Irish Aid's 'Bang the Drum' tent to get a taste of how it feels to play an African drum. And in the Education Zone, you can drop by Irish Aid's gazebo to find out more about the organisatin's development education work.
Africa Day Limerick takes place in the grounds of Limerick City Hall on Merchant's Quay. The event opens to the public at 12noon this Sunday, 30th May, and finishes at 6pm. Entry is free of charge.
