Food Zone
There was an array of delicious African food and drinks for visitors to purchase at Irish Aid's Africa Day Limerick. Food on offer ranged from jerk chicken, plaintain and flat bread to mixed fried rice and wild boar sausages.
There were also various concessions selling coffee, tea and other drinks located throughout the grounds of Limerick City Hall. And for those wishing to bring their own food and drinks, there was a picnic area available for use.
The following food vendors had a presence at Africa Day Limerick:
Biltong.ie
Biltong.ie sold dry foodstuffs from South Africa at Africa Day Limerick. Its stall was located inside Limerick City Hall, in the Glass Street area.
Biltong.ie is run by South African nationals, Lukas and Rene Swart, who have been resident in Ireland since 2001. They have a background in the food industry through various restaurants and catering ventures in South Africa, and have always believed in healthy and natural eating.
Having grown up in a country where fine dining and good food is common practice, Lukas and Rene started making boerewors and biltong for their own consumption in Ireland. Word quickly got out and requests came in from fellow South Africans and Irish friends. Thus, Biltong.ie was born, and the company now offers high-protein beef snacks; biltong; dry wors, and boerewors. Further information about Biltong.ie is avalable here.
Apart from Biltong.ie, visitors could buy food from the following outlets:
- Timbuktu
- Zantan
- A Taste of Africa
- Akatshi
